It’s still possible to buy Actos® because the stores are legally allowed to sell it, but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating it. Two European countries, France and Germany, are no longer allowing this drug to be sold because their concerns about its safety are so great.

The FDA Gives a Warning

The FDA has declared that some people who take Actos® increase their risk of contracting bladder cancer. Those who have been found to have the highest risk are people who have taken Actos® for the longest time at the highest doses.

The symptoms of bladder cancer associated with Actos® are:

• Urine in the patient’s blood,
• Painful urination,
• The urge to urinate without being able to,
• Lower abdominal pain or back pain.

All over the country, lawsuits filed by people who have taken Actos® are being reviewed because the manufacturer never warned them they could be at increased risk for bladder cancer.

Also, the FDA has requested that drug manufacturers place what is called a black box warning informing patients of the possibility of increased heart disease while on this drug. The FDA has already issued warnings that patients are at a higher risk of heart attacks, high blood pressure and strokes if they take Actos®.

Notice: The FDA doesn’t give a stronger warning than the black box warning.

The FDA continues to study the current research to determine if they need to possibly take Actos® off of the market completely.

Sometimes, Actos® causes congestive heart failure; in other instances, it will worsen the symptoms that were already in existence. It’s recommended that patients who take Actos® notify their physicians if they begin to notice any of the symptoms of heart failure which include:

• Swollen hands or feet,
• Weight gain that has no logical explanation,
• Difficulties breathing,
• Feeling tired.

The many side effects patients experience from taking Actos® are:

• Headaches,
• Infections of the sinuses,
• Dental issues,
• Pain in the muscles,
• Sore throat,
• The propensity to retain water,
• Feeling fatigued,
• Stomach aches,
• Jaundiced eyes,
• Not having an appetite,
• Feeling nauseous,
• Problems with their eyesight,
• Trouble breathing,
• Pain in the chest.

Further, studies that were performed after Actos® had already been marketed to the public have shown that there is also an increased risk for patients to contract hepatitis, have their livers fail, become inflamed and to see their liver enzymes rise.

Actos® Continues to Receive Warnings and Patients Continue to Experience Side Effects

The FDA has found a connection between Actos® and a condition called rhabdomyolysis which is when the muscle tissue degenerates and enters the bloodstream.
