So you want to be a Lawyer

If you stop and think for a minute about the law, you will notice that almost every aspect of our society is affected by the legal system. There is great responsibility that comes with being a lawyer and these people are obligated to follow a strict code of ethics. Their job is to represent their client in civil and criminal trials as they present evidence to support their case.

To become a lawyer, you must first have a four-year college degree and then pass three years of law school. Then there is the written bar exam but each state will have their own requirements.  It is save to say that it takes about seven years of full-time study but there are some law schools that will allow part-time or night classes.  These years in college will cover topics such as speaking, researching, reading, writing, analyzing and of course thinking logically. These are all skills that are required to succeed in law school and in the field of law.

In 2008 about twenty-six percent of lawyers were self-employed. They either had their own practice or they were partners in a law firm. Positions in law firms, corporations, nonprofit and government is where most salaried lawyers work.
