In spite of this widely held belief that a market orientation is becoming a competitive necessity in the professional service context it appears that there is relatively little unanimity about what a market orientation is, what it entails in professional service firms, and how best such an orientation may be achieved. To some degree this uncertainty has been reflected in the academic literature concerning market orientation over the past twenty-five years.

Early perspectives on the issue of market orientation focused upon the role of the marketing function and the structural issue of marketing activities and responsibilities. In essence this perspective related market orientation to marketing organization by viewing the imple¬mentation of the marketing concept as concerned with the creation of a marketing department, with a powerful chief marketing executive who had direct responsibility for a whole range of strategic and tactical marketing activities for the firm.’

A later perspective took the ‘ing’ out of marketing orientation and focused instead upon the cultural orientation of the organization. In this view the role and function of a marketing department was seen as the ‘trappings’ of a market orientation at best, and irrelevant at worst. The key issue in this perspective of a market orientation was the cultural characteristics of an organization in the way that a ‘customer focus’ was evidenced in the culture and activities of an organization. Thus in order to achieve a market orientation the critical goal was to create an organizational culture that exhibited a strong customer focus. Viewing ‘confidence’ as the primary benefit sought by clients can have a dramatic effect in the way that a firm interfaces with the client since it allows the firm to see what is really important to the client.

While organizational and individual clients of PSFs do share some common characteristics in their approach to buying professional services, some important differences necessitate looking at the buying behaviour and decision processes of each in turn.

It is obviously impossible to model accurately the behaviour and decision making process of all types of buyers of professional services. A number of frameworks have been developed, however, that do give a potentially useful insight into the buying behaviour of both corporate and individual clients. Controlled rise in interest rates. The increase in interest rates will only be allowed under certain conditions: when a promotional rate of low interest balance transfer credit cards expires, if the Prime Rate increases, and when the cardholder defaults on payments for 60 days or more.

Under the new Credit Card Law, the “universal default clause” is not allowed permanently. This means that credit cards providers can not increase your current rate because of late payments with other creditors. In addition, the change of credit card balance transfer rate is only possible after the first year of the program. In case of change, the issuer must give at least 45-day notice before the new rate applies.

The privilege to refuse. If you are not satisfied with the new Terms and Conditions of the issuer of your credit card, you can refuse them by closing the account. Refusing means that the cardholder has the right to pay the remaining costs under the old term. You may request a repayment period extended to five years.

Restrictions on student credit cards. Young people under 21 can not open accounts on their own, unless they have proof of independent income or have a co-signer to guarantee the account.

Add to that, credit card providers are not allowed to launch advertising campaigns within 1000 feet from college campus. This point protects young people against the risk of bad credit because of overspending, mismanagement or having too many credit cards for students.

Cardholders have more opportunity to pay on time. With the new Credit Card Law, all providers are required to send their billing statements at least 21 days before the due date. Compared to the billing notice of 14 days, the new law gives the cardholder the option of paying their low interest balance transfer credit cards without incurring late fees or interest charges. In addition, late fees may be charged if the payment owed date falls on a weekend or holiday, when the bank is closed.
